on an aside note: FB apps. aren't very cloudy at all... my app. was/is just going to be a piece of Javascript (or any other client-side script) that people fetch from elsewhere - most likely my Google Code page.

I don't need any outside server time at all... though something like Farmville would need buckets of it.

I use the fox sometimes. Mainly when opera wont load things and only reason why I use opera is the handy speed dial thing :P (yeah there is probably an add-on for that for fox).

Anyway, where was I going with this? Oh, right. I'm sitting here just thinking I wish I knew how to do this stuff.

Totally OT: but other month I came 3rd in an official map making/scripting contest for an EA game (battleforge). Hey, its not much but its something considering like in most cases it was self-taught.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

Develop it as a portable app. Will probably solve a number of issues.
That way it runs from either the drive it downloads too. Just find the source for the mozilla engine and build off that, much like the MTX client.

sorry to revive a slightly aging thread but i have some news about my little app...

I kinda stopped develpoment for a little while (3 weeks) coz i got bored and then went on holidays but im back into it have converted it to a standalone app (thnx for the suggestion Stormin Norman). Im using XULRunner as the base (which is pretty much firefox base) so it means that:
(A) It will be standalone, which means you dont need to be using firefox to use it,
and
(B) It is completely cross platform, so it works on windows, mac and unix (thnx to firefox engine).

Im also going to publish it as a firefox extension for those using it and that dont want to run it standalone (although the main reason i went to standalone is because it adds a fair bit to firefox's loading time, which i dont enjoy).

The standalone version will have the capability (after i finish tweaking the default temp folder storage) to be run from an external drive, ie usb thumb stick, so it will also be completely portable. XULRunner doesnt need to hook into the os, so it should (i still have to test) run from usb etc on uni computers with any trace (installations/additions to registry etc) in the host os (i have a feeling the uni doesnt want users installing shit on the computers :P).

i hope im not going too into detail..

I dont have access to a mac, other than at uni, so if someone with one wants to do some testing that would be great.

Im currently sorting out the I/O for file streams and its quite hard to find decent up-to-date info on how to accomplish it using the firefox engine, if anyone knows anything about it, id really appreciate a hand, if not il still get there in the end.

other than the I/O its pretty much ready, although it will need to be bug tested on all platforms before im ready to call it complete.

Im predicting 2 weeks max until its done and ready to have final testing, my labs start in 2 weeks and i really want to get it done before my uni work load gets prioritized over it. ...and after 3 days at uni im already sick of blackboard again :P i want it automated already.

If you want to try out what ive done so far, let me know. but if you do id really appreciate feedback. and bug reports (it is completely stable so far on win7 on both my laptop and pc, but murphys laws says that it might bug out on sumone elses). jst post a reply saying you want what im upto and il pm you a link.

---
Thats it from me..
Jst thought id give those who care (if any  ) an update
